One of the first things many first time user of The Gimp ask is "How to I draw a straight line." It is really quite easy although not obvious.
First, open a new window to draw something on. Then click on the tool for painting fuzzy bush strokes. You'll know which one this is by holding the mouse over it and reading the tooltip. You could also look it up in the documentation but how many of us really read that stuff. Now, click on the window's drawing area, press the shift key and click somewhere else. You will see a line appear. Once you let go of the second click, the line will be drawn. Simple.
